Brief Description:

Dr. William Montgomery Gabard (1922-2006) was a member of the faculty at Valdosta State University where he served as professor and head of the history department and the founding Director of International Studies. He was a founding member of the board of directors of the Southern Center for International Studies and The Japan-America Society in Georgia. Active in the Georgia Historical Society, he served that organization as its first non-Savannah president. He was founding president of the Lowndes County Historical Society. These prints which were purchased from his estate represent only a small portion of his collection...

The collection includes late 18th to 19th century maps from Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1792-1868), his sonĀ  Mitchell, S. Augustus, Jr. (Samuel Augustus), Tanner, Henry Schenck (1786-1858), and Johnson & Browning. Most are maps depicting the area around the Middle East/ Asia though there are some of America and Europe. There are also three reproduction prints from the Codex Manesse, as well as a Sowerby illustration.
