Abstract

Songye tribal masks and power figures from Congo, Africa. Seized by United States Fish and Wildlife Service while being smuggled into Hartsfield International Airport. Some pieces incorporated materials harvested from endangered species, which were removed. United States Fish and Wildlife Service donated these materials to Valdosta State University Archives in 2011. Another intake of 6 items being smuggled from Cameroon were donated in 2015.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Songye tribal masks and power figures from Congo, Africa. Seized by United States Fish and Wildlife Service while being smuggled into Hartsfield International Airport. Some pieces incorporated materials harvested from endangered species, which were removed. United States Fish and Wildlife Service donated these materials to Valdosta State University Archives in 2011. Thirty-four art pieces distributed across thirty-three item entries; Songye masks, artifacts, and power figures from Congo, Africa. Six additional items were donated by United States Fish and Wildlife service seized upon shipment from Cameroon.  All items are in the African Arts Gallery in display cases on the third floor of Odum Library.

Another shipment of 7 figures and masks (1 damaged) was mailed from US. Fish and Wildlife in 2015.

Appraisal Information: Thirty-four art pieces seized by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service at Hartfield Airport in 2004. Donated to the Albany Art Museum who returned due to lack of space. In 2015, 7 additional pieces (1 damaged) were acquired from a seizure from Cameron.

Description: Monkey mask with hair.

Media:  Polychrome wood and hair.

Size: 16" x 9 3/8" x 6 3/4".

Surface: Loss of pigment (edges of face, nose area, raised ridges in white areas), scrapes, chips, and dents, especially around front sides; large chip around nose.

Stability: Hair falling out, slight losses along edges, appears structurally sound.

Infestation: Possible growth (inside mouth, reverse forehead), small pinholes, cobwebs.

Media: Polychrome wood and fur.

Surface: Surface loss, color good.

Stability: Structural crack (five inches, top of head), crack (one and threee quarter inches- left side, rear of head), scrapes along bottom, paint chipping near eyelids.

Infestation: Cobwebs inside attachment holes.

Material: Wood, paint, and hair.

Size: 15" x 10" x 7".

Surface: Scratching and wear beside holes on bottom; light scratching between nose and eyes; color variations on ribbed white top.

Stability: Interior crack on forehead above eyes, profound losses to back.

Infestation: Some dirt in little sacs in crack; light cobwebs in eyebrow indention.

Description: Mask/sculpture: Janus head figure.

Media: Carved wood and cowry shell.

Size: 11 3/4" x 10 3/4" x 9 1/2".

Surface: Mold-like substance (eye area of unbroken face), significant wear throughout; remnants of pigment around features, pink accretion on most of unbroken face.

Stability: Cracking, including many radial cracks from top, longest toward broken face, two and three quarters inches from edge between faces, six and three eights by three quarters inches at widest, unbroken face at note, two inches, loss from cheek to chin, three and a half inches by one and a quarter inches at widest.

Infestation: Cobwebs and accretion inside, pinholes throughout, some areas collapsed, substantial loss to one face, apparently from infestation.

Size: 8 1/2" x 4" x 5" or 8 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 4 1/2".

Surface: Small area of white mold, upper right side of head, dime-sized abrasion on right side, abrasion on lower left of back.

Stability: Cracks on front lower right, right side of mouth, crack extending up right side of head, crack extending from bottom left to lower portion of back side, crack on left side of face, crack on top of left side, several periodic dents around base, dent on upper right, several substantial vertical cracks.

Description: Mask with mane and tassels.

Media: Polychrome wood, fiber, cowry shell, nut.

Size: 15 1/4" x 10 5/8" x 5 1/4".

Surface: Small white spots (reverse and front top), wear (throughout, especially at edges of face, eyes, and protruding areas), finish dull throughout, except right forehead area, scrapes throughout face and ears.

Stability: Loss (top side, bottom up; entire right side, cheek to mane, approximately ten inches by four inches), crack ( forehead, right side, one and one sixteenth inches, right cheek, half of an inch), rope strands very frayed, one apparently missing from right cheek, sections of lips missing.

Infestation: Cobwebs.

Description: Elephant mask.

Media: Polychrome wood and cowry shell/gourd.

Size: 25" x 11" x 13 3/4".

Surface: Surface soiled, wear to pigment, especially at back edges, scuffing underside back, pigment loss on cowry eyes, pigment rubbed off on reverse where piece rests, slight wear to right tusk bend.

Stability: Approximately two and three quarter inch of left trunk missing, losses from bottom of trunk on end, three eighths inch crack at top of ear, one and seven sixteenths inch and one and three eighths inch crack on right side of head above ear, scrapes throughout.

Infestation: Powdery residue inside trunk, some cobwebs.

Note: MS-115-007 does not exist; as a result, Items 7 through 33 do not feature matching Item and MS numbers.

Description: Standing figure with neck rings.

Media: Carved wood and cowry shells.

Size: 16 1/8" x 4 1/2" x 4".

Surface: Significant wear all over, especially in raised areas, white accretion in four spots on right side of face, abrasion on heels of both feet, both ears, left toe, forehead.

Stability: Cracks, damage to lower back and buttocks, clusters of holes, particularly around pelvis, head, and mouth.

Infestation: Slight cobwebs in recessed areas, bore holes in head, face, and stomach.

Description: Double-headed hippopotamus.

Media: Carved wood, cowry shells, fiber.

Size: 21" x 5" x 5 1/2".

Surface: Significant wear throughout, old damage to cowry side of face.

Stability: Left leg detached on cowrie side, fiber brittle, shell missing from spiral side, near shoulder, leg, old damage to snout on cowry side, one and three quarters inch crack on bottom, chipping to leg on lower part of cowry side, off-kilter, may be missing other pieces, significant chips on faces.

Infestation: Cobwebs around center hole.

Description: Double-headed horn figure.

Media: Wood, fiber, horn/bone, teeth, and beads.

Size: 19" x 3" x 2 1/2".

Surface: Loss, right side belt area, surface coloring, tooth on top of head (may be soil), horn scuffed on left and right sides, whitish accretion, both heads.

Stability: Crack at elbow on right arm, loss from tooth at top of right head, edge of attached wooden tooth ragged, loss to surface of horn at attachment, where wrapping ends.

Infestation: Cobwebs, possible growth around webbing.

Description: Standing figure on elongated base.

Media: Wood, paint, and string.

Size: 24" x 4" x 4".

Surface: Discolored around feet and inside arms, may have slight water damage on base.

Stability: Crack in back of head, splits and erosion on base.

Infestation: Lichen growth on uneven base and body of figure, two different types of lichens.

Description: Horned figure.

Media: Wood, hide, hair, metal studs, beads, claw, shells, fiber, and perhaps bone and leather.

Size: 12 3/8" x 3 1/2" x 3 3/4".

Surface: Wear to surface at base, soiled but undamaged, chipping around base.

Stability: Horn on head very loose, crack on right side of head below spike, three quarters of an inch long, one and three sixteenths of an inch long crack above underside of knee, four inch crack on left side from base up, apron very brittle.

Infestation: Whitish accretion, mold, or stain on top of head.

Description: Standing female figure with pot with head.

Media: Wood, fiber, beads, metal, bone.

Size: 33 1/2" x 11" x 11 1/2".

Surface: Wear to left earlobe from metal ring, soil buildup throughout, wood flaking around right armpit, green accretion on right side of bowl lid headdress, small hole under right side of corner, surface wear to edge of lid top.

Stability: Two-inch loss to front lip of bowl, fiber worn on left side of pot lid, tooth/claw split in half vertically, loss to left rear headdress, new loss of arm on right side of left figure holding bowl, large and likely old loss to buttocks, both arms missing from right figure holding bowl, right arm missing from other two, large structural cracks in base and leg.

Infestation: Cobwebs in recesses, cobwebs and debris inside bowl.

Description: Standing figure with hat.

Media: Carved wood, fiber, beads, metal, shells, and fur.

Size: 24 3/8" x 7" x 7" or 24 3/8" x 8" x 7".

Surface: Soiled, particularly in crevices, surface abrasions on chest, left hand, left shoulder, right shoulder, forehead, temple, and right of head, metal discolored, heavy wear throughout, hat crusted and worn.

Stability: Structural crack on forehead, loss to knothole, cracking in base, long crack in chest, back of head, and side of left foot, right side of hat attachment broken, deep network of cracks encompassing much of back, head, and base.

Infestation: Cobwebs under side crevices.

Media: Carved wood.

Size: 36 3/8" x 10" x 9 3/4".

Surface: Pitting and cracking throughout surface, scrape to left cheek, one and five eighths inch abrasion to top of chest, blue accretion from right forearm to left abdomen, white paintlike accretion behind left ear and left buttocks, abrasion to left cheek, abrasion to left upper arm, indentation on inside of right elbow, scrape on right side of stomach.

Stability: Loss to left side of hairpiece, likely old, two old holes in left of neck, cracks on face (from nose: five inches, three and three quarters inches, five and a half inches, six inches, two and seven eighths inches, two and seven eighths inches, two and a half inches, four and three eighths inches, six and three eighths inches, three inches, two and five eighths inches), cracks in chest above arms, from right to left and from front (four and an eighth inches, two and three eighth inches, three and three eighth inches, back of left shoulder, two and one half inches, twelve and one eighth inches, chest below arms, from right to left seven and one eighth inches, six and seven eighths inches, seven and five eighths inches, eight and one quarter inches, arms from right to left, two and a half inches, two and three quarters inches, three and one sixteenths inches, four and three sixteenths inches scrapes on feet, penis, and hands, cracks on legs, five and seven eighths inches, right foot, sole to top, throughout left angle, loss inside left thigh down to foot, loss from top of hairpiece, scrape on right ear.

Stability: Seems soft around handle, may be unstable.

Infestation: None visible.

Description: Animal foot noisemaker.

Media: Animal foot, including fur, skin, and claws, metal, and stone.

Size: 4" x 2 1/8" x 3 1/2".

Surface: Metal area soiled with dirt, fur appears to also be soiled.

Stability: Pieces appear to be missing from foot, particularly around nails.

Infestation: None visible.

Surface: Much surface loss due to dryrot or infestation, dull throughout, heavily soiled, heavy scratches and abrasions.

Stability: Cracks: four and a half inches by five eighths of an inch at widest, radial cracking in head, from right eye across face (six and a half inches, two and five eighths of an inch, one and a half inches, two and a half inches, one and three fourths inches, six and five eighths inches, particularly deep, four and three eights of an inch), front left shoulder across chest, two and five eighths inches across shoulder, two and a half inches across hand, six and three eighths inches on chest, three and the fourths inches and three and three eighths inches on left shoulder, five eighths of an inch on rear shoulder, two and five eighths on left where leg meets torso, one and seven eighths inches under left knee, two and three eighths inches, and one and one fourth inches, one and one eighth inches, and one and one fourth inches in horn.

Infestation: Heavy cobweb and insect debris, particularly in base, significant damage from insects or dryrot along edge of base, buttocks, back, right shoulder, right rear of head, front of legs, and nose.

Media: Polychromed wood, horn, metal, fur.

Size: 24 5/8" x 6 1/4" x 6 3/8".

Surface: Top of bone is cracked, heavily worn, surface cracking and loss from insects throughout, fur scraggling and sparse and appears to be missing large sections, possibly a skirt.

Stability: Cracking at knotholes, nose, back of head, radially from top of head, along joints, hands, mask, feet at base, and throughout base.

Infestation: Debris and cobwebs in horn and crevices.

Description: Nkisi figure.

Media: Wood, raffin, horn.

Size: 8" x 8" x 21" or 8" x 6 1/2" x 21".

Surface: Hard, shiny, waxy accretion at top of head and forehead, surface dull with much wear.

Stability: Cracks: one and three quarters inches at both sides of stomach at hands, one inch, one inch, and one half inch cracks on chin, one half inch crack on top lip, two inch crack on left cheek, three and five eighths inch crack from chin through eye, one and a half inch and one and three sixteenth inch cracks on left forearm, numerous radial cracks at back of head towards top, one and a quarter inch at right shoulder (particularly deep), nine inch crack at rear of left shoulder to horn (particularly long and deep); adhesive for horn cracking.

Infestation: Cobwebs, insect egg sack in deep crack, white accretion throughout, particularly on head.

Media: Wood, beads, cowry, seed pods, and canvas.

Size: 30 1/2" x 12" x 13 1/2".

Surface: Heavily soiled, especially beaded areas and canvas; chips/abrasions at edge of left nostril, front edge, and left ear; stains throughout beard.

Stability: Beads loose at left temple and forehead, missing one inch area a lobe of left ear, broken shell at top of lead towards the left of the front, substantial cracking.

Infestation: Cobwebs in recessed areas, eyes, ears, mouth, etc.

Description: Wood mask.

Media: Carved wood, pigment, and hair.

Size: 20 1/2" x 9" x 10 1/4".

Surface:Loss of hair from left nostril, chip one and a half by two and five eighths inches in size on front neck area, wear in neck area, wear and loss from mouth, nose, and crest, soiled surface, wear throughout, finish dull, and several old gouges on right side of head crest one and five sixteenths, two and three sixteenths, and fifteen sixteenths in size.

Stability: Chipping on right side of neck, lower nose, right eye area, left eye area, top edge of right side of crest, and top rear black rectangle on the right side of head, numerous cracks, one in particular on top that splits the wood front to back, large loss on chin.

Infestation: Some cobwebs/debris in eye area and above mouth, evidence of burrowing on left eye and bottom of mouth, accumulation of dust in crevices, evidence of water damage on back.

Description: Crouching nude bearded male figure.

Media: Wood, seed pod, shells, fur.

Size: 8" x 8 1/4" x 23 5/8".

Surface: White accretion on lips, nose, and forehead, surface worn evenly and burnished even in areas of loss, surface cracking in facial area, particularly profound abrasions on arms, accretion (perhaps paint) on face.

Stability: Areas of loss: left rear side of head (older),  left shoulder, upper arm, left torso area, cracking within, especially rear left shoulder under arm extending to front, entire arm weak, end of genitals lost, seven eighths of an inch loss at right knee, two and three quarters loss at right thigh at connection to hip, right side from shoulder to buttocks, and right buttocks (newer); crack: rear of right angle, two and one eighth inches, cracks on both feet; large pieces of both feet appear to be missing, numerous losses from back.

Infestation: Cobweb, debris in crevasses.

Description: Carved mask.

Media: Carved wood, pigment, metal, fur.

Size: 13 3/4" x 11 3/8" x 16".

Surface:  Small pinholes throughout, some penetrating from front to back, surface irregular from soil accretion and wear, heavy scratching on forehead, right ear, cheek, base edges, right ear missing, left cheek missing carved area, scratches to nose, losses and scratches to left ear, scrapes throughout.

Stability: Very brittle wood, cracking; numerous radial cracks, above left ear to above right ear, etc.; possible loss to right side of base; base irregular.

Infestation: Cobwebs and debris inside top of head and crevasses, lost ear appears to display signs of profound infestation; potential growth on base and left side.

Description: Multi-faced totem.

Media: Wood, pigment, fur, and leather.

Size: 13 3/4" x 5" x 5".

Surface: Wear throughout, especially in relief areas; paper taped to base reads: "04-Kimatwe Matwe REGA."

Stability: Crack along side of head from neck to crown at four and three quarters inches, crack along lower face across right eye at one and five eighths inches, loss to left brow, bridge of nose, top heads, lower lip, bottom heads, left and right eye areas, lower part of nose, and upper lip.

Infestation: Cobwebs, white accretions throughout.

Media: Wood, pigment, metal, and teeth.

Size: 18" x 12" x 8".

Surface: Heavy flaking, facial area, soiled on bottom half of facial area, abrasions at connection edge, pigment in eyes cracked and flaking.

Stability: Several structural cracks in facial area, broken piece previously repaired, acute cracking.

Infestation: Some evidence of boring.

Media: Carved wood.

Size: 16 1/2" x 13 1/4" x 13".

Surface: Worn at top of seat, soiled throughout, sticky blue accretion on seat.

Stability: Cracking: buttocks, right hand to center across seat, radial across top, right side of head, vertical through chest to groin, right knee down through base, groin to loss in base; chipping in front of left hand; large loss from base; profound cracks extending from base through chest.

Infestation: Cobwebs in cracks, crevasses, under base, etc.; debris in webs.

Title: Seated, bearded figure with feathered headdress.

Media: Wood, feathers, metal, hide, beads, raffia, hair.

Size: 18" x 7" x 6 1/2".

Surface: Soiled, especially in creases, feathers matted, broken, and worn, surface wear.

Stability: Skin dry and brittle, hair missing from left nostril, piece broken, one missing holes in cheek, possible loss under right arm, large loss to right side of base, insect debris and raffia throughout, cracked from bottom to waist, profound cracks in base.

Infestation: Evidence inside base, cobwebs, debris.

Media: Wood, bone, shell, skin, raffia, horn, metal, teeth, and fur.

Size: 45" x 12" x 7".

Surface: Heavily soiled in parts, fur matted, hard accretion to back of head, possibly missing component to back of head, scratches throughout head.

Stability: Large and deep crack at about twenty-five and five eighths inches stretching from head to buttocks, figure on right arm loose, cracks throughout head, large cracks in base, profound cracks in back of torso extending to head, severe cracks in neck, skirt appears to be crumbling.

Infestation: Cobwebs, egg sacks, and debris throughout.

Description: Bearded figure holding penis.

Media: Wood, bone/horn, bead, and fiber.

Size: 27" x 10 1/4" x 9".

Surface: Two inch scuff on right forearm, mild abrasions throughout, particularly around head.

Stability: Cracks: two at twelve and five eighths inches at right side of face, headband to chest, right forearm completely cracked off, U-shaped to side of right foot, both sides where legs attach to abdomen, left side abdomen to stomach, pod ornament at elbow, pod on necklace cracked one and a quarter, two and a quarter, and two and three eighths inches, five and a half inches at left side of face, parallel cracking on both feet, crushed spot on right thigh, chip to left ear, crack in genitals, loss to right side of bear near the tip.

Infestation: Small insect sacks, cobwebs.

Stability: Profound loss to base area, especially in front, cracks: three and one eighth inches loss in area at base, two and a half, three and a half, and five inches up base from bottom, one, one, one and a half, and one and five eighths inches vertical in stomach, one inch at left breast, and one and a half inch at right wrist; surface cracks: right arm, two in left breast, half an inch under nose, three eighths of an inch at right side of neck, three inches at tip of nose to forehead, seven eighths of an inch above left ear; loss under chin (seems old).

Infestation: Cobwebs.

Surface: Cracks: radial in bottom of base, radial in top clockwise from ten o'clock: one and a half inches, three quarters of an inch, one and five eighths inches, one and three eighths inches, one half of an inch, one inch, one inch, two and an eighth inches, three quarters of an inch, five eighths of an inch, five eighths of an inch, five eighths of an inch, five eighths of an inch, three quarters of an inch, one and three eighths inches, two and three sixteenths inches, five eighths of an inch, half of an inch, half of an inch, four inch in chest, three quarters of an inch in back right of stomach, around right edge of ankle, left to right under chin: seven eighths of an inch, one and one sixteenth inches, one and three eighths inches, one inch, one inch, one half of an inch; pods missing: two from right side and back, chip from top edge at one half by one quarter of an inch, at least eleven small chips from top edge in front of left hand, crack in between legs at one and seven eighths inches, and chip from top edge at three eighths by one quarter of an inch.

Infestation: Cobweb.

Surface: Heavily soiled, especially around fiber, metal oxidized, some minor scrapes, especially around head, base, and hands.

Stability: Fiber stiff, cracking: left foot,  rear of base at three and one quarter, two and three eighth, and two and three quarter inches, base to ankle, top to bottom, four and a half inches at belly at left hand, four and one quarter inches at belly, three quarter inches at top of chest, two and three eighths inches diagonal across right foot, U-shaped from right shoulder toward elbow, across crown of right head at two inches, left side of left head, semi-circle around eye socket at three inches, left neck at three and a quarter inches deep, two and three eights and two inches at rear of left shoulder, hole at top of right foot, radial crack on left head at two and one eighth, three and one eighth, four and one eighth, four and five eighths inches.

Infestation: None visible.

Surface: Soiled throughout, dirt caked into beads and fiber, white accretion on head.

Stability: Numerous cracks throughout, the most major being: five and one half inches at left of base, seven inches at right side of face (seems relatively new), two inches at chest, left side of center face from top to chin; loss from left eye through mouth and chin.

Infestation: Heavy.
