Acquisition Method: Most of the loose pictures are from the GSWC and VSC annuals.  Other pictures have been added to the photograph collection over the years.

Appraisal Information: A deed of gift signed by Scott Sikes on behalf of Betsey Powell of a 1930's ariel photograph of campus.  A note on the finding aid says w6-mc-os-8, but may be in the drawer with aerial photographs.

This collection was created by Pediment Publishing for the Lowndes Country Pictorial Book Project in association with the Valdosta Daily Times, The Lowndes County Historical Society, and the Valdosta State University Archives and Special Collections in the summer and fall of 2013.

This collection contains historic photos of Lowndes County spanning from 1895-1974.

Extent: 163 Digital Scans.

Local community members brought their photographs to the Lowndes County Historical Society to be scanned. ·        DHD_039  --        Dasher children gathered around their dad's Model-A Touring car at Dasher home place on Clay Road in Valdosta, 1933. This 'farm' is still owned by members of the Dasher family.  Standing is C.W., then Lynnel, Vernon, Raymond being held by Freda Mae and Glen standing in the front.

The road was on north side of railroad. The radio station (2013) on 84 sits about 100 yards northwest of the house.

Junior high and high school boys participated in this program. They helped students cross the street before and after school. Those known: Harold Cohen, Harry Luke, Arnold Cohen, Robert Pinkston, George Morgan, Rudolph Howell, Jim Tunison, Harrison Tillman.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1020  --              :Young Valdosta school children and their teacher are getting to ride the Southern Railroad passenger train in the early 1950s. For many this was the first time to ride a train. Mr. A.R. Green is the man on the right wearing a dark suit and hat. He was the one of the agents for Southern Railroad.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1021  --              Mollie Copeland Dasher, wife of Caulie W. Dasher, and Lola Dasher Wetherington, shown collecting cane juice on the Dasher Farm on Clay Road in Valdosta. This is probably around Thanksgiving in the late 1940s.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1022  --              Caulie Dasher shown collecting sugar cane juice in gallon jugs which he sold to McRae Drugs on North Ashley Street, 1940s. Caulie was employed at Register Furniture at the time. The Dasher Farm on Clay Road in Valdosta is still owned by one of Caulie's sons, Raymond Dasher.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1023  --              The Oren Andrew Dasher family of Valdosta, 1899. Oren, his wife, Laura Touchton are shown with seven of their eight children. They were life-long residents of Lowndes County. Many descendants of this family still reside in Valdosta and Lowndes County. Standing are: Caulie W. (1887-1958); James Calvin, 1882-1963); Edward 'Eddie' (1879-1959); and Johnnie Oren (1884-1961). Sitting: Talley Isaiah (1890-1980); Oren Andrew, father (1858-1933); Laura Touchton, mother (1861-1952); Carl, baby (1898-1971); and Lola (1894-1954).

·        LowndesCoGA1_1024  --              Caulie William Dasher, life-long resident of Lowndes County and Valdosta, 1917. He was a veteran of World War I and is He is shown in his Army uniform.  In 2013, three of his surviving children live in Valdosta with one other son living in Jacksonville, Florida.

When construction of I-75 began, George moved the family and business to where Voigt's Sheet Metal Works is located today.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1246  --              The loan, George G. Voigt received on June 17, 1946, to open and establish his sheet metal business. That business was Voigt's Sheet Metal Works, which is still going strong 67 years later in 2013. During those 67 years, Voigt's has opened Voigt Steel Supply; Voigt's Crane Rental and Voigt's Metal Fabrication in Moultrie.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1259  --              Newspaper clipping of DeLane Renfroe who won the Valdosta Daily Times bicycle race for the second time in 1942. The race ran from Waycross to Valdosta. He won the first race in four hours, 15 minutes and the second race in three hours, 50 minutes. The prize he won each time was a new bicycle.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1265  --              Mickey McMillan in his soap box derby racer he used to win the derby in Valdosta in July of 1967. With Mickey is his dad, Bobby McMillan and his brother, Robbie.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1271  --              These model World War II airplanes were built and photographed by Jack Davis in 1943. The pictures were sent to his brother, Joe Davis, and nearly got him in trouble with the government because the looked so realistic.

Larus, son of Claude and Ida Leigh Larus, who worked in his father's business after returning to Naylor having served his country in World War II. He worked for Ellinor Motor Company before it became Langdale Motor Company. He then worked for Owens Illinois paper mill until retirment in 1983. He was a deacon, song-leader and ordained minister of Naylor Baptist Church, having been a member since the age of 12. He married Doris Tomlinson and had two daughters; Dianne Larus Harrell and Sheryll Larus Mixon.

·        LowndesCoGA1_1338  --              John P. Larus and his wife, Minerva Walker Larus and daughter, Edyess., circa 1910 John P. Larus and his wife owned timberland and farmland outside Naylor. They moved into Naylor in the early 1900s. Mr. Larus was mail carrier for Naylor Post Office for many years. They had one daughter, Edyess and three sons; Claude 'C.R.,' Merrell and Thomas. Claude and Merrell operated a garage and filing station in Naylor on the corner of Hwy. 84 and Hwy. 135 for over 50 years.

Some of his cabbage plants were: Early Jersey, Large Charleston, Succession and Early Flat Dutch. Onion plants: Sweet Spanish, Bermuda and Prize Taker. Pepper plants: California Wonder, World Beater and Pimeto. Tomato plants: Gulf State, Prichard, Break O' Day and Valiant.
