The Stetson Collection contains 100,000 pages of Photostats ranging from 1518-1821 taken from colonial archives in Spain, especially Archivo General de Indias at Seville. The documents are official correspondences between Spain and Spanish Florida primarily dealing with the first period of Spanish occupation in Florida. This information was compiled in the 1920s by John B. Stetson, Jr. under the direction of James A. Robertson, known as the Florida State Historical Collection. The collection was held in Tocoma Park, Maryland in 1929, later loaned to the Library of Congress, and then bought by the University of Florida in 1954 and placed in the P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History in Gainesville in cooperation with the mission of Nombre de Dios in St. Augustine (1965). Most names are recorded as they appear on the Photostats. Some document descriptions are partially or completely in Spanish and are recorded in both Spanish and a rough English translation courtesy of www.freetranslation.com or www.babelfish.com. Documents marked as duplicates or with questionable places or dates are so marked on the Photostats.
