278 American Breakfast - Mexican Dinner Pippy, "Big Rod" Rodriguez, Stinker, Mama, Pedro, Mexican Mama/Pippy's Mama, Jilly, St. George Island, restaurant Jill, aka Jilly, and her Mama and little brother Stinker have to live in St. George for the summer while their mama works for Big Rod. Just another hot day hanging around the restaurant where their mamas work, Pippy, Pedro, Stinker, and Jill try stay cool. Pippy continues to get in trouble with Big Rod and this day he is mad because he was beaten the night before, he runs into the road and is hit by a white car. 16 This folder includes two handwritten rough drafts of "The Last Preacher" and "American Breakfast-Mexican Dinner." 280 Going to Jackson Velda Crandell, Willis, Donald and Ronald Jacobs, Linda, Ned, Albert, Mary, Benny (also spelled Bennie), Robbie, Inman and Wilson, Dean, prison in Jackson, GA and the Crandell farm in Albany, GA Velda Crandell's husband, brother-in-law, two sons, and a daughter-in-law were killed in 1974. She and her two remaining children, Willis and Linda, travel to Jackson for the murderer's execution. The execution of Donald Jacobs has been delayed and rescheduled over the past 31 years and Velda has mixed emotions of the event. Donald Jacobs consumed her life these past few decades, now she will watch him die. 23

281 The Legacy of Roosevelt Clay "Mrs. Dr. Cunningham," Roosevelt Clay, Roosevelt's five sons, Cornerville, Swanoochee Co., GA (southeast GA) This story discusses the wealth given to a black man in the 1960s when his former boss' wife dies. The townsfolk call Roosevelt and his family humble and are angry at the Clays for not selling or giving up the land. 6 This folder includes two drafts of the short story "The Legacy of Roosevelt Clay." The General suspects the man is going to kill him or beat him and leave him for dead,. 286 The Serpent Knows Orlando (Rosellen) Quick, Froman, Sissy, Buckeye, Natasha Wells, Anthony Dell, The Colonel, Cornerville, Georgia Orlando Quick walks outside one morning to find her ex-husband sitting in her car. Recently out of hail, Froman had warned her that he would kill her. She goes on the ride of her life to save herself and her children from this man's gun. 289 Voice of the Alapaha aka Along a Wider River Dump Sanders, Pender Swanoochee County, Dump's fishing spot While fishing at his favorite fishing hole, Dump meets up with his former boss Pender - a man he hates. Pender gets bite by a snake and dies before Dump can leave to go get help. 7 The folder contains 2 drafts and 1 photocopy (of the published version) of the story "Voice of the Alapaha," the title was changed to "Along a Wider River" by shortly before publication in "Best Stories of the South." Also, a printed email from Janice Daugharty to the editor dated October 4, 1996 explains her decision to rename the story. The final version was 7 pages. 37 12

290 Once Upon A Summer Jim, Sissy, Granmama Rivers, Little Ned, daddy, the sicklady, mama Granmama Rivers house Sissy and Jim stay with their estranged father's mother over the summer. 15 This folder contains correspondence from Janice Daugharty's husband's long-lost cousin (Audry Daugharty Bolz) which was the basis for the story "Once Upon a Summer." Includes copies of correspondence (7 packets in all). Also included is a typed draft of "Once Upon a Summer" which is 15 1/2 pages in length. 37 13
 

 
291 Its Okay to Cry Bethann, Holly, Interstate 75, southbound lane Bethann's grandmother, the woman she calls Mama, just died from cancer. Her 19-year-old sister Holly now needs a home, but the reckless teenager is difficult and has many bad habits. One the trip to Miami, in a near crash, Holly decides she does not want to live with Bethann and gets out of the Jeep to hitchhike back home. 12 Folder includes one handwritten draft of "Its Okay to Cry," its 13 pages in length. Aunt Imo, Luzanne, Grannie (aka Mommer), Emmacee, welfare lady Aunt Imo's home Luzanne brings Grannie to her Aunt Imo's house to stay, but Imo's daughter, Emmacee recently had a stroke and is bedridden and needs constant care and supervision. Imo can not help her mother, besides Emmacee's illness, she relies on food stamps and welfare to get by. While trying to make other arrangements for her mother, Grannie has a bad fall. 17 Draft of "Wherebouts are We," published in Blue Cathedral Anthology by Red Hen Press. 37 15
