PRJ 1005 Suckerfish

Close up of a suckerfish in a net.

"Home of the Sucker Fish," by Carol Heard, Bainbridge, Georgia, 2002.

This series includes vertical file materials, photographs, video, field tapes, field notes, and correspondence related to a Georgia Council for the Arts Folklife Program grant to the city of Bainbridge to document the suckerfish fisheries and related traditions of the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers. The project culminated in the 2nd Annual Suckerfish Festival at the Bainbridge Boat Basin (January 2002). The festival folded after 2002 due to lack of interest by the city. Project director was Carol Heard, and Laurie K. Sommers served as folklife consultant. Copies of all project materials were given to the SGFP. This includes photographs by Department of Industry, Trade, and Tourism photographer Diane Kirkland, a TV piece plus raw footage by Kent Williams of WALB Albany, and the suckerfish festival program book with its series of excellent essays and photos which document this tradition.
