“Dogs in a pack”

by William Anderson

A young mans arm hangs from the drivers window

Sandy stretch of yard, slowing to the lane

The car stops in the lacy shade

Three girls, bathing in the river

Squeal and laugh and splash

Sounds pitch over the guttered sand

A split cypress rail, flagged with girls panties

Green eyes sunk peeking from the powdery gray dirt

Eyes on the strangers

Two men burst through the door

Swinging the barrel over her head

Stoned faced

Flash of metal bulb over head bombs

She cocks the pistol

Watch them hands boys

" A bunch of women "
