“Summer Nights”
by JeNai Mayfield
Listen, sister
in the quickening dusk
the sandy stretch of year
hangs fire on the white sand
searching the shadows
dances the beam
of metal.
Ladies, listen
the hot still air
the abyss of their screams
sowing corn to the wavery heat.
The lacy shade of magnolia
whine of mosquitoes
medley of singing glass
sugar with a spoon
blameless woods.
Rosettes of white twine
sun glints
blue sky
setting sun.
