“Dogs in a Phrase”

by Shane Padgett

Sowing corn to the wavery heat,

A grape car shows in peeps.

One whole section of wire,

Mosquitoes swarming,

Setting sun hangs fire,

Cowboy, sneering.

The muzzle of the pistol,

Crazy women.

In a flash of metal,

The throb of frogs,

A bunch of women,

Down like dogs.

Listen to him;

Words like sugar.

I'm sorry

To know better,

Ain't fit water.

Don’t let her,

Checking for it.
