“Summer Break”
by Ja'Cinta Fed & Jessica Ray
An old-girt face rendering hard-eyed
expressions with a skimpy slit
mouth axes of her pupils peeking from
the powdery gray dirt. Sage
gullies, still white castle of ants
showering yellow on bundles of
tobacco in hot still air ice chunks
melt the sweet strong tea from a
gurgling jug. A quickening dust a
far-off rumble, shattering glass
ammunition blast bounces hollow off the
walls. The whine of
mosquitoes and croaking, of frogs at.
the river, .A bright almond face
with green eyes peeps through the green
of the woods. Sun glints
across a beaten tin-roof, A magnolia
dull gold withered by the
wavering heat. Stretch of yard prickly
pears, locusts eclipsing greets
Spanish moss dangles like wind-tattered
smoke. Two quiet girls, a
boneless bosom of softness clip in the
river bank with a shrill singing
voice hoping school starts soon.
