Morals of Life | Aaron Reed | Lithograph of black man and his son, man is leaning over boy at an angle. Bucket and dresser and walls in the background. The legend on the back describes in detail the meaning of the elements. Hung on second floor of Odum left hand side.
Story:
Red, Orange, and Yellow represent warm colors. The small circle is the main focal point of the painting. It represents the old way of life. It shows warm emotion and strong relationship between the father and his son.
The Blue colors represent cool surroundings. The large circle represents a look into the new world. It shows the drastic change of the world today where many households lack a father figure. And alone, mothers are faced with teaching their children the values of life.
The outside of the circle represents the old way of life. The father is talking to his son by telling him that he had to use a rag and a bucket to wash his clothes. He had old dressers without handles that sat against old, beat-up walls. He didn't have any computers, washing machines, or new polished dressers against the smooth clean walls. Life is full of hard work and sacrifices.
In conclusion, the painting goes from old to new, then back to old. The father is teaching his son what is important in life; hence the title, the "Morals of Life". | |
