Cornerville, GA in Swanoochee County When sixteen-yea-old Loujean Scruvy's mother dies in childbirth, Loujean knows the responsibility of the new baby will fall on her-- she is the only girl among three brothers and a no-account father. The problems of the Scurvy family -- the scourge of Swanoochee County, Georgia-have always run deep. The shame of not having enough money to afford a decent funeral for their mother is too much for Loujean, but with a new baby to are for, it is up to her three brothers to come up with a way to save face. Buck, the eldest and a talented idler, decides to approach Swanoochee County's notoriously corrupt commissioner to earn some money. Pee Wee want to help, but he's lost in a world of intoxication and can barley fend for himself. The youngest, Alamand, sensitive and artistic, reacts to his mother's death by retreating into his imagination -- leaving Loujean to worry that their mama may never get a proper burial. But there is also Earl--the boys' aloof companion--who is secretly looking to win Loujean's heart. Dressed up in his good yellow shirt, Earl stumbles onto his own unlikely heroism as he searches for a way to set things right. 264 Earl in A Yellow Shirt-Second of two typed manuscript 28 1 1997
