conflict is the struggle for survival in the lower socio-economic region
for both races and black-white relations, lack of communication and
perceptions of each other as reflected in attitudes and behaviors, as
well as narrator hints. This novel is written as a parallel on the Civil Rights movement, which also provides a contrast between the non-progressive black community in terms of civil rights and the more progressive in other areas. Black recognize white supremacy but do not recognize their won despair over circumstances beyond their control. In their struggle for survival, they are concerned primarily with external matters and seek immediate gratification and moments of well being to sustain them in their quest.
