Map and Newspaper article. The map shows the small community of Mayes which is near Stilwell, it is an adaption to the map made by C.L. (Wren) Fletcher of Stillwell. The article discusses how an act of the council in 1883 authorized 9 districts of the Cherokee Nation to build a courthouse. The Mayes community was most likely named after Joel Bryan Mayes who was the Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1891-1895.
