Description
Lakota Oglala Sioux Indians gathered to observe the 100th anniversary of Wounded Knee. Wounded Knee was a massacre in which 300 Sioux Indians, most women, children, and elderly were killed by the U.S. Seventh Calvary. A purification ritual took place in a traditional Indian sweat lodge. Occupants burned sage and then smoked sacred tobacco and said prayers to the Great Spirit. The theme of the purification included forgiveness.
