Description
A 53-day protest led Canadian troops in armored vehicles to sweep into a Mowhawk community. Two Mohawk men were injured in factional fighting. The dispute is over a gold course expansion onto land that is supposedly the Mohawks. Journalists were not allowed in the Kahnesatake Indian Settlement which overlooks the village of Oka. The uprising ended after the government bought the land and said it would turn it over to the Indians.
