Description
Historical home of Major Ridge, a Cherokee Indian Leader. The home was built by Gah-na-tah-tle-gi. This was a prophetic name that means "walking the mountain tops". He was a speaker of the Council of Cherokee Nation, a soldier in the War of 1812, and became a major appointed by General Andrew Jackson. When his family moved from Tennessee to North Georgia his name was translated by the whites to Ridge. Ridge ended up marrying a Cherokee Princess Se-hoy-a, and two years later he built the house which is now a histoical home due to its connection with the Trail of Tears. His home was where the final treaty of the Cherokee removal was negotiated.
