Description
William Vann was a slave that belonged to Drake Vann. Drake took his slaves and fled to the south and once freedom was achieved he brought them back and left them in Flint, east of Tahlequa. (aka Stilwell). Drake settled in Mayes County in the Grand River Bottom. The Vann Family and the Ryder family came from the Choctaw Nation and were the first settlers on the Grand River bottom. The family traveled from the Choctaw Nation to Brushy Creek and organized the Brushy Creek Baptist Church.
