Article is broken down into smaller sections. The first section focuses on the early exploration of Mayes. Mayes County was not mentioned in the early exploration days. Most likely the first white people to step on Mayes soil was Desoto. Those who traveled across this territory most likely did not keep a journal of their visit. The next section talks about the first settlement. When the United States made the Louisiana Purchase, this land was included.
