This page lists recommended file formats for preservation, access, and web archiving at Valdosta State University Archives & Special Collections.
Preservation File Types
- Images: TIFF (preferred), PNG (if TIFF unavailable), JPEG 2000 (JP2)
- Documents: PDF/A (archival), plain text (UTF-8), XML
- Audio: WAV (uncompressed), FLAC (lossless)
- Video: MOV (lossless), MP4 (high-quality)
- Metadata: XML, JSON, CSV
Web Archives
- WARC (.warc): Standard format for web archive data
- WACZ (.wacz): Portable web archive package (for easier sharing and access)
Access File Types
- Images: JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png)
- Documents: PDF, TXT
- Audio: MP3, AAC
- Video: MP4
